Built in Oregon by Lancair and supported by Cessna. Fly at retractable speeds without the cost, complexity and insurance expense associated with retractable airplanes. Nose gear was strength-modified to withstand the most ham-fisted ground handlers abuse. Always hangared and long-term resident of high and dry Nevada climate. Dual-spar wing construction, impact-resistant five-sixteenths-inch-thick windshield, carbon-fiber construction of the rudder and ailerons, and a no-single-failure-point philosophy that dictated three attach points for each aileron and the rudder and four-point attachments for each flap are indications of Columbia’s high construction quality – way ahead of its time.
